Catalan wineries presented this Wednesday in San Francisco (California) their wines and cavas to over 175 US wine distributors, importers, restauranteurs and other sectors professionals as part of Catalonia Trade & Investment’s Catalan Wines USA programme. It was the most attended wine-tasting experience since the programme’s launch in 2010, doubling the normal attendance figures.
The event was held at The Bently Reserve, located in the financial district of this Californian city. Given the high attendance, the programme had to be duplicated, with two sessions being held led by Lucas Pay, ex-sommelier from El Bulli restaurant, along with two subsequent wine and cava tastings accompanied by a menu based on tapas prepared by the Telefèric Barcelona restaurant, recognised as the best Spanish restaurant in the Bay Area in 2016.
The participating wineries were Can Discrete (DO Penedès and DO Cava), Canals & Munné (Do Cava), Cava & Hotel Mas Tinell (DO Cava and DO Penedès), Celler Ronadelles (DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant), De Muller (DOQ Priorat and DO Tarragona), Caves Bolet via Forward Gourmet (DO Penedès and DO Cava), Heretat Montrubí (DO Penedès), Julià & Navinés (DO Cava and DO Penedès), L’Olivera (Do Costers del Segre and DO Catalunya) and Nadal (DO Cava and DO Penedès).
50 wineries promoted since 2010
Catalonia Trade & Investment’s Catalan Wines USA programme, with the collaboration of the Department of Agriculture via Prodeca and INCAVI, has promoted 50 Catalan wineries for 10 different DOs in the United States since 2010, the year in which the programme began, promoted by the Miami Trade & Investment office.
The San Francisco event was the 22nd wine-tasting session organized by this programme, which has presented Catalan wines and cava to more than 5,000 American professionals in the sector. The outcome so far is that 72% of the wineries participating in these events have successfully closed distribution agreements for their wines and cavas with American distributors, importers and restaurateurs.
The United States is the leading importer of wines worldwide. California, whose geography and geographical conditions are similar to those of Catalonia, concentrates much of domestic wine production and is the state where most wine is consumed with a per capita consumption of 19.73 litres per year. The next event organized by Catalan Wines USA will take place on May 24 in New York.
